JSchnip's Review
Great good, great music, ok service. Food was cooked as requested, and came out moist, rich in flavor. The jazz is very tight, almost a little too much at times, but not to the point of annoyance. Service seemed a bit overloaded, but we didn't mind as it gave us more time for the jazz.
A Plaza area jazz gem
First, I'll acknowledge I'm a regular so there's some inherent positive bias in this review. But I've become a regular because Jardines is such a special jazz joint gem. If you are enamoured by this Plaza neighborghood but don't like the recent detremental trends with the likes of Lynn McCarthy, Nabil Hadadd, Highland Properties and their nationwide cookie cutter resturant chains, forgo the yuppie joints on the Country Club Plaza and head across Mill Creek Park and up the hill to 4536 Main. At Jardines you'll find great food, including quality lunches, great music and a healthy level of diversity. Its black & white, young & old, gay & straight, business & artsy all drawn in by a love of melodious jazz, friendly folks and really attractive waitstaff babes. Contrary to our great local jazz heritage, there's been a string of jazz clubs that have come and gone in KC of late. But Jardines has persisted because of its character and class. Its great for outa towners, big groups or a comfy beer at the bar on your own. You'll also see more than your share of professional athletes, celebrities and single gals here because Jardines is a quaint little out of the way jazz joint where they can go, feel comfy and not get harassed (except by the crusty old owner: Greg.--- Oct'03 update! Greg sold out to long time server/manager Beena. She's unrelenting in terms of her demands for quality and not as managerially abrasive (sorry Greg) There's big improvements in the works! All this quality food and music and never a cover charge. Schedule Jardines for a great dinner or post-dinner drink and you won't regret it. Its a class act.
