Kansas City has some great southern food (the Peach Tree, Strouds), Cajun eats (The Jazz) and Caribbean fare (G's Jamaican). But now, in an attractively festive atmosphere, downtown has an amalgam of all three. The Mango Room, on the first floor of Town Pavilion, serves fried chicken, jambalaya and jerk pork in an expansive dining room decorated in dark wood and bright Caribbean colors. Reggae and jazz provide the soundtrack, and pictures of Bob Marley and Billie Holliday hang on the walls. Other menu items include oyster po' boys, scarlet snapper, jerk-rubbed ribeye and key lime pie. As the downtown offices empty, the Mango Room fills for the weekly happy hour at the capaciously comfortable bar. And even if you miss happy hour, the Mango Room's reasonable prices and jovial atmosphere are reason enough to spend a couple extra hours downtown.

picked the restaurant out of the blue before the theatre show. I had the jerk chicken and my husband had the seafood jambalya. fried jambalaya rice balls for appetizers (to die for) and a bob marlytini (great). Husband wants to bring out of town guests now. service was great. ask for tony. loved it!

Simply wonderful

This has to be one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Tough location to get to currently due to all of the downtown construction - but well worth it. The restaurant itself is beautiful, the service is always excellent, and the food is **outstanding**. Dinner can end up being a little pricey - but worth every penny. I can't rave enough about this place - TRY IT!!

Wow

It's unbleievable what people in Kansas City consider to be good food. Winstead's and Gates are salty, prefabricatred food which generally leaves me feeling like I drank liquid Crisco. Thankfully the Mango Room now offers a full spectrum of hearty Southern fare along with delicate fish specials, fun appetizers and spicy caribbean dishes. The room is beautiful, and the happy hour is bumpin'. Check it out soon. And if you judge a sit down restaurant on one to go meal, then you should probably go back home and eat a Swanson TV dinner.

Needs a Lot of Help

I was trying to be supportive of the new restaurant in downtown Kansas City, so I ordered something to go in mid-June. I had their daily special of Shrimp and Grits and a slice of Gingerbread Cake. The shrimp and grits was completely tasteless. For a place claiming to be influenced by Caribbean and Cajun influences, you'd think that they would go ahead and use some spices. But the worst was the Gingerbread Cake. It tasted like mud. I spent $6 on the dessert, and I do hate to waste money, but I didn't even finish the first bite before I threw it away. I hope some of their other offerings are more palatable. As for me, there are too many other decent restaurants to bother going back to this one.
