Most hotel coffee shops are long on convenience and short on personality, so it's refreshing to visit Upper Deck in the Las Vegas Club, a busy, noisy upstairs eatery that looks more like a friendly neighborhood sports bar. The menu matches the setting, with its assortment of sandwiches, burgers and salads, plus some terrific late-night specials, including fried chicken, steak and pancakes. Those with a professional athlete-sized appetite may opt for the 20-ounce T-bone steak that packs twice as much flavor as you might expect given the rock-bottom price. It's the little touches throughout that make Upper Deck memorable; the milkshakes made from real ice cream, the tasty cold-cut sandwiches, and the selection of sports memorabilia that lines the walls. It's one of downtown's hidden treasures, but may not stay that way for long. Note: The 12-inch, nine-pound Big Daddy Barrick Burger is now being served here while The Plaza Diner is under construction. True beef lovers are well aware of the challenge: Eat the whole thing in one sitting and get it free.

Bad Management

It seems since the takeover of the Plaza, Freemont Club, Gold Spike and the Western, my old hangout, they have all gone downhill. If it weren't for the dollar beers, who and the hell in their right mind would go there? I haven't in my lifetime seen more dirty, unprofessionally run, abusive, don't give a sh-t, places! All I can say is enter at your own risk!

You can't go home again...

I can't tell you how many thousands of burgers I have eaten at the Las Vegas Club over the past 40 years. I can tell you how many I have eaten since the original owners lost control of the place. Only two. I stopped going there. Don't believe high ratings for the Upper Deck. Locals know, and locals don't go much anymore. Sorry!
