Big Mama's Rib Shack has been cooking Southern specialties for more than 75 years. Best known for its barbecue selections -- the sauce has won every local barbecue award -- Big Mama's also serves Cajun and Creole specialties, as well as what used to be called soul food before we all got politically correct. Actually, at Big Mama's the chitlins, ham hocks, yams, oxtails, hot links and collard greens are still labeled soul food right on the menu and are a favorite of celebrity customers Chuck Berry and Shaquille O'Neal. The restaurant certainly doesn't look like a typical Hollywood hangout; the building used to be a McDonald's, the floors are bare and diners sit at flea market tables and chairs. The gumbo, a house specialty, is served in a Styrofoam cup. But all is forgiven after one bite of the barbecued ribs, beef, pork, ham or chicken, all slow cooked over a hickory pit and brushed with a special secret sauce.

The best!
By JaneIondon on 06/06/2008
Ummmm Mmmmmmm Ummmmmmm!!! This is the best in Vegas......To hell with atmosphere. The food is wonderful and so is the service. I love the quant guests too! (even the ladies of the night) Don't come to Vegas if you don't want to see them.

Not in the Sauce
By kyleagain on 07/19/2006
While the place is falling apart, the people there were very friendly. I can't speak for the "soul food", I went strictly for BBQ--and I wasn't that impressed. The quality of the meat was decent, but the sauce left me stranded. I love good BBQ sauce, but so few places here in Vegas have something flavorful to add. My favorites are the Memphis sauce at Lucilles and the Tomato/Chipotle at Salt Lick.

Interesting Place/Food
By ajfred3 on 03/09/2005
I went after reading the recommendation of Big Mama's with my brother who flew in from Atlanta. I tried the smothered chicken which was fabulous. He had pork chops and about stabbed me when I tried to sneak a bite. It was an interesting crowd however, we sat near 4 beautiful half-dressed ladies of the evening who told each other how much they had made lately ("I made a G last night"). But the Sweet Potato pie and cornbread was worth putting up with it.
