Rate and Write a Review The smell of gas, asphalt and burning rubber await you. Sound exciting? It should. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway has the distinction of being the second newest superspeedway to be built in the southwest region of the United States in more than 20 years (only the California Speedway in Fontana is newer). But it also holds another distinction: LVMS is one of the hottest racing facilities in the country. Many drivers and teams consider this 1,600-acre complex to be the best in the U.S., and since its 1996 inaugural season, seating has been expanded to accommodate more than 100,000 spectators. The reason is simple: LVMS has something for every racing fan. Each year the speedway plays host to NASCAR events, NHRA events and the UAW Daimler-Chrysler 400 as well as many other exciting races. The track is also somewhat of a shining star in the world of racing. It features a 1.5-mile superspeedway, a 2.5-mile FIA-approved road course, a 4,000-foot drag strip and paved and dirt short track ovals. Also on the property are facilities for Go-Kart, Legends Car, Sand Drag and Motocross competition. And thanks to Midnight Mayhem on Fridays, the race fever doesn't end at sundown. These grudge drags are designed to attract illegal street racing to a safe environment without taking away too much of the thrill. The LVMS business complex is also home to track tours and several racing schools. Amateur speedsters can race the track in real Indy cars with the Mario Andretti and Richard Petty driving school classes. Visitors who feel more comfortable away from the track can check out the museum run by racing legend Caroll Shelby. The best part? Most of the major hotels have their own shuttles to the speedway, so patrons don't have to drive like Mario Andretti to get here.
