Since opening in 1989, Shadow Creek has had much the same reputation as the lengendary nightclub Area 51: mysterious, guarded, rumored to be home to magnificent wonders, but accessible only to a privileged few. Casino mogul Steve Wynn hired designer Tom Fazio to handcraft the most magnificent golf course known to man on a 350-acre site of empty flatland. Sixty million dollars later, Shadow Creek opened in 1989, but only to the high rollers who stayed in one of Wynn's resort properties. The place is surrounded by a 10-foot chain link fence, and the playing area is dug into the desert, so it's invisible from the nearest road and surrounding land. Cameras are forbidden, to keep the wonders of the Creek a mystery to the masses. The course winds through lakes, waterfalls, rolling hillsides and more than 200 varieties of trees. Exotic birds chirp in the distance, and the flowing rock bed streams and rocky outcroppings appear such a natural part of the environment that you might think they had been around for centuries. The course rarely sees more than two dozen rounds in a day, many from PGA professionals, celebrities and the occasional ex-president. Ranked among the top 10 courses in the world by many major golf publications, Shadow Creek might be the most elusive experience in the game.
