He may not pull a rabbit out of his hat or make the Statute of Liberty disappear, but he will turn himself into a white tiger. Granted, it's a stuffed animal, but therein lies the brilliance of Mac King's act. An accomplished magician whose tricks appear to be more simple than sophisticated, Mac poses as a country bumpkin who seems just as surprised as we are when his magic tricks work. And when a trick doesn't work the way he's led the audience to believe it might, he repeatedly observes, "That would have been cool, though." King's act contains an unusual combination of visual gags, sleight of hand and quirky humor. In fact, he can play almost any card dealt for comic effect. And when he's not dealing with flying carrots and Fig Newtons, King's best tricks are those that involve audience participation. He brings a tyke on stage for a fishing lesson that ends with him spitting a live goldfish out of his mouth, and his best moment comes when he subjects a newlywed couple to his jumping card trick while wrapped in his bright yellow cloak of invisibility. With his bumbling personality, bowl haircut and plaid suit, King offers audiences an hour of entertainment they'll be hard-pressed to top. No wonder King's two performances are among the top entries on the booming platform of afternoon shows.
