A Howard Johnson's motel may be an unlikely setting for one of Las Vegas' most popular Cuban restaurants, but the Florida Cafe has garnered an enthusiastic following among the city's Cuban population, and with those who just enjoy the experience of an unfamiliar cuisine. Novices might start with the Cubano, a submarine-style sandwich that packs ham, roast pork, cheese and pickles between a sliced length of Cuban bread, which is then squashed in a grill until it takes on a sloppy but succulent new form and texture. But if the aromas of hot Latin spices prove too tempting to resist, you might opt instead for such specialties as bistec de palomilla (sirloin steak flavored with garlic and lime), picadillo aceitunado (a ground-beef and olive dish) or bacalao a la vizcaina (aka salt cod cooked in red Spanish sauce). Owner-chef Sergio Perez, a Havana native, stresses freshness and authenticity in his ingredients, from the Florida Cafe's famous Cuban breakfast (two eggs, two stuffed potatoes, sweet plantains and toast) to the pizzas, topped with bacalo, pineapple, or cured beef. Don't pass up the ice cream case, where such exotic flavors as mango, guayaba, mamey and coco lurk amid the vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. And since a full meal can be had for less than $15, there's no reason not to indulge.

Whenever I am in Vegas I have to go the The Florida Cafe. The food is delicious, having lived in Miami,FL for most of my life I always feel like I have gone back home to eat a home cooked meal.

Authentic my butt!

My mother was born in Havana, Cuba and she is quite the chef. My father was born in Miami to Cuban parents. I KNOW what Cuban food is and this place is a disgrace. I'm aware that the owners are Cuban, so there are only two possibilities here. #1 being that they are Cuban, but don't actually know how to cook - they just introduced the food to people who don't know any better, or #2 being that the owner born AFTER Castro took over and therefore, never had the access to the ingredients required to make good, AUTHENTIC, Cuban food.

The Florida Cafe offers the best Cuban food, with tasty dishes and wonderful lunch specials too! I've eaten there many times and over the years they have gone up in my estimation with their services and quality but never their prices. Great atmosphere!

Best Food
By cspgamer on 04/09/2006
Anytime I'm in Vegas I try looking for a better cuban restaurant than the Florida Cafe but i just can't. I look high I look low but no Restaurant is better than the Florida Cafe. In my opinion the best entree is filetio de pollo . My wife's favorite is ropa vieja with moro and sweet banana with avocado. The flavor is real cuban cuisine I feel like im in La Bodigita del Medio in Havana. I suggest the flan (nothing is better than flan). The service was excellent with the employees kind and did not dilly dally while on the job.
