Is there any corner of the planet left that doesn't have its own Hard Rock Cafe? The franchise that launched a thousand imitators, many of which have long since fallen by the wayside (Fashion Cafe, anyone?), just keeps on rockin', selling its signature T-shirts and serving up standard American fare to the beat of music blared at wince-inducing volumes. The Vegas location shares many of the stylish traits of the neighboring Hard Rock Hotel casino -- hardwood floors, circular layout, art deco accents -- and the menu will be familiar to anyone who has been inside a Hard Rock anywhere in the world. Burgers are by far the most popular selection, and why not -- they're a half-pound each, served juicy and tender with tasty French fries. Other specialties include fajitas, meat loaf and a variety of chicken and pasta dishes.

Tasty food, fun atmosphere

I was in Vegas recently for a conference, and I was on a mini-mission for a friend with whom I work. Seems she collects little Hard Rock Cafe pins from around the world, and upon hearing of my upcoming trip to Vegas she asked if I could swing by the Hard Rock there to get her a pin. Having never been to one of these joints, I told her it would be no problem. Am I glad she asked! This place was great. The food was nothing revolutionary, but it was very tasty and well-prepared and in proportions big enough to satisfy me yet not so overbearing that I felt like I was eating two meals in one. I had the cheeseburger, which came out exactly as I ordered and the fries were a special treat as well. The staff were all very friendly, and since I went by myself, they asked if I wanted to sit at the counter in the back. I said sure, and after a few minutes I felt priveleged. This counter looked directly into the kitchen, where the energetic and friendly cooks and chefs had their fun while preparing food. Every now and then, a floor staff member would sidle up next to me at the bar, while on their break or just before their shift, and they ate their complimentary meal. They were a very friendly bunch and I made a mental note to myself to try and eat at such counters in the future! I felt like one of the gang, and if I lived in the area I know I'd be a regular customer. I was also reading a copy of Anthony Bourdain's 'Kitchen Confidential' while I ate, which piqued the interest of the head chef. Hard Rock has a lot of cool music videos playing throughout your meal, which is entertaining and fun, but not so intrusive that it prevents you from having a meaningful conversation with your mates. It is a clean place, wide open spaces, and the gift shop had several dozen pins for me to choose from. I didn't get to try anything from the bar, but it seemed well-stocked and worth the effort the next time I'm in Vegas.
