Nope, it's not a hill that Teddy Roosevelt led a battle charge up. But he led plenty on this hill. Bought in 1880, the house was completed and became Teddy and family's home in 1887. As president, TR would summer here while attending to affairs of state to the point that it was called the Summer White House. Many a political rally was held off his back porch (a section of the railing was permanently removed so he could orate more effectively), and it was here in 1905 that Roosevelt first brought together envoys from warring Russia and Japan on the way to establishing the peace that won him a Nobel Peace Prize. But more importantly, this was a family home, where his kids played and grew up, and where he loved to be. He said, "I wonder if you will ever know how I love Sagamore Hill," to his wife as he lay in bed the day before he passed. These beautiful grounds, including the main house, a visitors center, the Old Orchard Museum and a wonderful landscape, can attest to this, and a tour inside the main house will evince the life of the Roosevelts, and the many pursuits of the family patriarch. -- Fred Meyer

Great house of a very accomplished President. This was my first visit here in probably about 20 years. The only problem with the guided house tour is the somewhat narrow spaces in part of the house and the limited time to look into the rooms. The volunteer tour guide from the NPS was very good. Go on a warmer day so you can walk the beautiful grounds.
