With a choice of more than 20 taps of Belgium's finest beer and dozens more available by the bottle, you'll be hard-pressed to step away from Waterzooi's sleek bar. But the upscale renditions of traditional Belgian fare will make it worthwhile. Set in the midst of a somber shopping center in the heart of Garden City, this hip restaurant without attitude, fashioned by owners Chris Werle and Jeff Piciullo, is reminiscent of a wine cellar painted gold and black. The chic bistro, the name of which comes from a popular Belgian dish, tends to draw a crowd on weekends, so dinner reservations are recommended. True to its inspiration, the restaurant cooks up Belgian mainstay mussels and frites to perfection, and offers wine- and beer-tasting dinners weekly. Waterzooi also has an open-air lounge for dinner, lunch and brunch.

Hip, but in a low key way. Superb mussels in hearty portions. Wonderful beer selection...whatever Waterzooi means I like it.
