In the 17th century, Long Island's whalers knew Van Ausdall's hotel for its good food, strong drink and perhaps as a kindly place to stow one's harpoon over the long, cold winter. Flash forward a few hundred years and you'll find 105 Harbor occupying the same two-story colonial. Renovations have taken their toll on the original structure. The wood floors no longer sound with the clop of peg-legs, but it's still a culinary port of call of the first order. The dining room upstairs is all about the sea, and affords breathtaking views across the bay, while diners tuck into the watermelon seafood ceviche with citrus marinated lobster, shrimp and scallops, organic tomatoes, baby fried green in a grapefruit oil drizzle. The dining room downstairs is best enjoyed in the evening, as the fireplace roars and patrons tuck into macadamia hoisen rack of lamb with roasted shallot-whipped potatoes, wood-roasted asparagus, tropical fruit salsa, passion fruit demi-glace in a curry oil drizzle. Both dining rooms are elegant, with their brass sconces and flawless wainscoting. The weekend brunch is spectacular; the separate bar, which also has a fireplace, is big enough to accommodate a shipload of whalers, should they e'er return.

Food Good, Service Abysmal

We visited on Father's Day, a day on which you ordinarily would give a restaurant extra leeway. However, the restaurant was not busy at 1 pm when we arrived for our reservation, with several empty tables. We were seated promptly, and then the trouble started. We placed our luncheon order, and proceeded to wait 45 minutes for our appetizers while others seated after us were getting their entrees. Once they arrived, I had to send back the baked clams because they were so underdone - soft, soggy and obviously rushed. I then proceeded to wait another 15 minutes for them to bring it back. Entrees arrived shortly thereafter, while we were still eating our appetizers. We had to finish quickly and put our own plates to the side - no one bothered to clear them. When I spoke to the Manager, he actually rolled his eyes, despite the fact that I started with, "I realize it's Father's Day...." At this point I was getting more than annoyed. The manager eventually comped us for the coffee. Big sport. In short, ok food, terrible service, management unprofessional.

This Place needs a second look. They Changed Menus and Crew at the turn of the year and are putting out some amazing Stuff. Mark Serrantino ( from Millpond House) is Executive Chef and the Menu has gone from Average to Insane. Prices are Resonable and the Food is Oustanding.Service has been kicked up also. Make Reservations, They fill up quick on the weekends!!
