Munching on a crab cake burger at Bigelow's may give you the feeling of dining at sea in a galley below deck. Diners sit at a square bar which encloses the small kitchen and food-prep area, so you can watch the crew crack open your oysters while chatting to your closest shipmate about the one that got away. This tiny nautical bistro is the sort of thing you get in Montauk, except that the only water view at Bigelow's is of the sink. But as long as you don't look out the window, it's easy to pretend you're on vacation as you savor Bigelow's famous Ipswich fried steamer clams with bellies. Or bite the head off a smelt (small, whole freshwater fish fried to order). Anglers will feel right at home, for the decor is all nets and tackle.

The Best Fried Seafood in New York State
By Junggbro on 01/02/2009
I have been eating at Bigelow's for 15 years. They have the best fried seafood in New York. They prepare everything fresh made when ordererd, the staff are all very friendly and cordial, kinda feels like walking into a resturant on the Cape. I am a seafood junkie and this is the BEST SPOT in the state.

Unfortunately, the only show in town
By ClamBellyRick on 09/26/2008
If you want fried whole belly clams (Ipswich), and you live in Nassau County or western Suffolk, the unfortunate truth is that you MUST come here or make them yourself. There are a few places out east, and a couple in the City, but otherwise, this is the place. That said, unfortunately, they're not very good. They're flavorless, actually, although they LOOK like the real deal. Sorry to say, if you want the real deal, you have to go to New England, but if you Jones for Ipswich fried clams as I do, beggars can't be choosy.

gr8 food,annoying owner
By Gerwiz on 09/10/2008
been eating here 4 over 30 years, through 4 owners, the latest annoying as he hoovers over cash register. He has bad recolection as to waiting order to be seated as he bypassed me twice and really pissed me off with his attitude. food is consistantly good, but i may not return until next owner arrives.....
