Prolific restaurateurs John J Tunney III, his brother David Tunney and partner John Rieger completely reinvented their hot Huntington fixture at the height of its success. Days before demolition, first-time customers were still walking in, telling the men that the top Zagat-rated restaurant was the most beautiful they had ever seen. Eschewing dinnertime lines and a packed bar into the wee hours for a construction team, the partners simply felt ?it was time to make a change.? Dropping the oceanic ?Blue,? the space has become the hip, fun Honu Kitchen and Cocktails. The decor mixes new and vintage finds for an antique-chic vibe. Plush fabrics in rich reds, some woven with fleur de lis patterns, pair harmoniously with distressed leather. Enormous crystal chandeliers are fit for a ballroom while cast iron fixtures preside over a magnificent black marble topped bar. Since the renovation, the New York Times has rated Honu "Excellent" and one of the top Long Island restaurants for 2007.

WOW to the servers
By drfink2010 on 02/20/2007
Saturday 2/17/2007:Well, I have read the reviews... I have had drinks at the bar... nothing prepared myself, or my friends for what we received tableside from two magnificent waiters on your staff. Both of these young men were equally impressive as they complimented one another on the floor like two surgeons in an open-heart procedure; I am a Cardiac Surgeon, excuse the illustration. Jason and Mike are their names, and the service was flawless. Where one could not be, the other persevered. We never even had to ask for anything on a Saturday night no less. My friends and I watched them serenely, but quickly attend to all needs of the guests they were serving. They had to have 10 tables between them, but you never see them fret. My friends and I laughed as we reminisced about how terrible we were as servers in our day while attending college. These guys were something of another planet. Together, they achieved much more, and their tip certainly reflects their service. We had a bunch of appetizers, and by the suggestion of Jason, a salad mid-course of field greens, which was fabulous, and then dinner. The food is great, but adding the service to the equation, makes the whole experience Dynamite! Mike quickly cleared dishes, crumbed the table and offered dessert. We had the Crepes at his suggestions, and they were delicious. They both were on their game, and kept everything tight. Coats arrived before we could ask Jason for them. We did not even know he had the tickets. Prime, Macs, and Blackstone have terrible service, and the food is mediocre at best. The service is ALWAYS TERRIBLE. You have great steak on the menu, and the Tuna is amazing. And with the service being amazing, we are going to be swift to say, why not Blue Honu tonight. Great Job Jason and Mike.

All around great - from welcome at the door to after dinner drinks at the bar. Great ambiance, service and food!! A perfect night. Friendly, capable staff. Interesting and delicious food - especially loved the shrimp and scallop dish; and the special ribeye steak was incredible! We've been there a few times and it just keeps getting better. Love it!

THE BEST SERVICE EVER!!!
By geemoney2010 on 02/09/2007
Good day, usually I will write a review the moment I leave a restaurant. I actually let this marinate for a while, as I was extremely impressed with our server on Saturday 2/3/2007, and wanted to write a more than positive review. From when we walked in and had our coats checked, to the moment our server; who will remain nameless until the end, helped us put our coats on, shake my hand good bye, and walked us to the door, it was amazing. It was our first time in your restaurant. Our first impression, WHOA! Service began with a smile and an "Aloha" greeting. The server pulled my wife's chair out, placed the napkin in her lap, and introduced himself. He asked if we had been before, and when we said no, he immediately welcomed and thanked us for coming out. With recommendations of coconut martinis, and other cocktails, we conceded and ordered as he suggested. They were fabulous. He also suggested "VOSS," which we gladly accepted. After cocktails and water arrived, he boisterously went over the specials, outlined every detail of the dishes and pointed out so profoundly what Blue Honu was all about. His speech was so great, that I memorized the first few sentences, "Chef George and I suggest a succession of courses this evening which will entertain the palate, satisfy the craving, and leave a lasting impression upon you, ultimately letting you folks know what we here at Blue Honu, are all about." I mean, WOW. Who says that? So, we took his advice, and said order away. We were to begin with the Bento Box, only immediately he arrives with espresso cups with crab and corn bisque. Nice touch. Soon after, our Bento Box arrives and that was awesome. Presentation was a 10 as our server explained what everything in the Bento Box was, poured our soy sauce and said "Bon appetit." He then cleared the dishes, which I thought was odd considering it was Saturday, and there were Buss-boys, but he did it. I like that. He cleared from the right, which is proper French service. Now on our second round of cocktails, we then were graced with our second course. The Mixed greens salad, split for two. The perfect amount I might add, and as our server said, it was a palate pleaser. When we finished, he came over and said, “Before I have your main course come out, there is a wine that is going to compliment Chef Georges divine creations…” Since we were having that tremendous rib eye and lobster tail, I thought why not. Our server said the words; “Ferrari Carrano, Napa Valley Cabernet, and we have it for half of what other restaurants are charging.” Open it up, were my exact words. I love that wine. He graciously re-sets our table with fresh linen and silverware; two red wine glasses and then went for the wine. His presentation was on-point, and he poured the taste just as the food arrives. After I taste, and accept, he pours to my wife and then to me, again correct. Our steak came sliced and the lobster as well. The wine was, as he described, “an explosive combination with the rib eye.” Well, dinner was done, the wine was gone, and I realized, our water glasses were full, the table impeccable, and set up for coffee and dessert before he even talked about it. I never had to ask him for anything. All night. We actually were too full for dessert, but we ordered coffee, and our server sent over, Malosados, with compliments and thanks of everyone at Blue Honu. They were delicious. He then dropped the check with tootsie-rolls and said, “folks it was a pleasure to have spent the evening dining with you. I hope you had a truly wonderful time and I look forward to seeing you again here at Blue Honu. Mahalo.” Then, he took the coat check tickets off the table, and after I paid the check, he arrived with out coats only to help us put them on, shake my hand and walk us out. I have to tell you, I have been around for a while. I have dined everywhere in New York, and all over the world on business. Nothing compared to your restaurant, and no one can hold a candle to this guy. His name… Jason. I will be back.

Amazing Restaurant

Great restaurant! Beef Satay is amazing as well as the field greens salad. The coconut martinis are unbelievable. Service was fabulous-and everyone was really friendly. It's a cool looking place and they have a DJ that starts around 10pm on the weekends. Definitely recommend you try it!!
