With literally hundreds of Italian restaurants on Long Island, it's sometimes difficult to pick one where the food is as authentic as the atmosphere. Founded in 1976, King Umberto is actually two restaurants in one, and they're both superlative. The formal dining room is straight outta 'The Godfather,' with the plush furnishings, oil paintings and mood lighting you'd expect from an upscale Italian. But while the gnocchi in Umbriana sauce may bring out the boot in you, it's the pizza that has foodies flocking from all directions. Available in two sizes, 10-inch and 16-inch, Nicola Cesarano's culinary repertoire includes a Boscoreale pie with spinach crust, special sauce, black olives, artichokes and fresh mozzarella. But if you're heading for the Italian Riviera and don't want to outgrow your bikini (or Speedo), Nicola also makes a low-carb alternative with fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil -- add some peppers and onions, and that's amore.

King Umberto's Elmont
By Krankiekat on 08/23/2008
I've been going to King Umberto's since Sal and Rosario first opened in 1975. Up until I moved to New jersey in 2001 I probably averaged going there 2 to 3 times a week, and now I stll try to go everytime I am back on Long Island for one reason or another...usually once a month. I really miss having them close by and there is no place anywhere near as good as them in Northern New Jersey. I will admit that they are not quite as good as when Rosario and his brother Sal were in Kitchen cooking themselves but they still do a wondeful job and make everyone feel like family there. One slightly negetive comment I have is that their Canoli's and Italian Cheesecake use to the the absolute best anywhere and somewhere along the line over the past years and I'm not sure when they changed their recipes and I am very dissapointed. Stil for great homemade tasting, and simple Italian food there are very few places that can compare to King Umberto's...especially at their reasonable prices.

been going there since 1976 and the menu hasnt changed at all...Portions have gotten smaller and the capalini although great are the size of marbles compared to what they used to be. Pizza is the worst!!! Obviously people dont know good pizza Umbertos in New Hyde Park blows it away. Rosario is a phony.Try Steves Piccolo Buscolo in Westbury and then you will know what good food is !!!!!!!

Best Pizza
By SHELLBACK10 on 07/01/2008
I lived in Elmont. I moved to Howard Beach, I drove to Elmont for good pizza! I now live in North Carolina. It is to far to go for the best pizza! Besides, it would be cold by the time I got home.

The Reigning King

I've been coming to KU ever since my friend introduced me too it. And I've enjoyed every meal there. I don't see how anyone can give this place a bad review. The service is exceptional. The waiters and waitresses are very courteous and Rosario is the absolute best. The fried capellini is a must try and still one of my favorites.
