To become a good salsa dancer, you must surround yourself with the best -- and the best in Los Angeles go to the world-class Mayan Theatre. Known for its opulent, ancient indigenous architectural motif, the Mayan attracts top DJs and dancers who keep the club's two dance floors moving to salsa beats from as far as Africa and as near as mid-Wilshire. You can also find old-school, disco and high-energy beats in the second-floor bar area. If you're the timid type, but you still feel the rhythm pulling at your feet, head to the club early on Saturdays to catch an hour-long salsa lesson. It's not your abuelo's cha-cha-cha, so come prepared to sweat. On Friday nights, enjoy Latin house, rock en Espanol and the Mayan male and female go-go dancers. Did someone turn up the Latin heat?

Re: The Mayan etc.

Misscyndee02 is 100% right on about The Mayan it not a true Salsa venue it sucks. I agree with Granada on Sat., Steven's on Sun./Tues. For people in OC/Southbay Sachi is ok at best. I think the place is a dump and it's in Long Beach ...enough said. I prefer Tumbao @ Zanzibar near 3rd street Promenade or even Floridita in Hollywood (not great for dancing but cool). I think Monsoon has lost the dancer's on Wed. due to poor management and lousy promotion but no real options if you live on the west-side. Thursdays Mama, J's is good but come Nov. The Conga Room will re open it's door downtown and Thur. is going to become very competitive...c u on the dance floor!

Don't be mislead...

As a professional salsa dancer, you should know that the MAYAN is NOT the best place to go salsa dancing or learn salsa. The only time the Mayan is the place to be for a real taste of what the LA SALSA SCENE is all about is during competition season when the WORLD MAYAN SALSA COMPETITION takes place. This is every Saturday from Feb- mid May, then again for 4 weeks in September for 4 weeks. Aside from those dates the place sucks for salsa. If you want to "SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE BEST" on a Saturday night, head to the Granada in Alahambra, that is where the BEST come out to play. Salsa 7 Days a week Monday-Sachi in Long Beach Tuesdays- Steven's Steak House ( LA's Salseros HOME)Pro Night, come out if you dare. Commerce Mama Juana's Studio City ( Nice all level group) Wednesday's- Monsoons Santa Monica Thursdays- Mama Juana's ( Intermediate- Pro) Friday- Tapas Newport Beach Saturday- The Granada The Mayan (Feb-May) 4 weeks in Sept. Whoever does these write ups needs to do their research before posting these things.

Best spanish music you can possible find. Visited the Mayan for the first time on a Friday latin music was being played in the mezzanine they should really call it what it is a HALLWAY it was so hot you really can't enjoy yourself. If you are into Top 40 this is the place for you the main floor is not as bad.
