This motel is at the bottom of a short hill, and at the top, is the famous Sunset Strip. Just a few blocks west is the lively West Hollywood section of Santa Monica Blvd. A walk of just a few blocks south will lead you to some of the most expensive restaurants in Los Angeles on La Cienega. It's also about a 10-minute drive from the shopping in Beverly Hills and the attractions in Hollywood. The motel itself offers very little: color televisions, beds and bathrooms (no bathtubs). There are no phones in the rooms and no breakfast or coffee. There's free parking and a soda machine outside the office. -- Cathy Tamkin

Going to LA? Spend a night not a fortune! The Alta Cienega is a great little inn. Family owned since 1972,this classic 40's era MotorHotel is a great little secret. While not offering many ammenities the rooms are clean and comfortable. Lead singer of The Doors and famed poet,Jim Morrison called this place home for most of 1968-71. Resident owner/manager Charlie Yang and his wife will make you feel very much at home, offering coffee and danish when you wake up. For a bit if nostalgia at a affordable price you can't beat The Alta Cienega.

If you are a Doors fan check out room 32. Morrison lived there while recording LA Woman
