Though it's touted as a celebrity hangout, this Fairfax landmark is actually not the best place to stargaze. For one thing, the deli is so busy and the dining room so expansive, you might not spot a celeb even if one were in attendance. For another, the scene is much more neighborhood deli than hipster hang. People of all ages, income tax brackets, industries, and proclivities dine here, and customers pay little attention to their neighbors. Conversation is lively, but high-backed booths give you a sense of privacy. The dress code is incredibly casual, even by LA standards -- pajamas and slippers often seem to be the norm. The menu is vast and includes all New York/Jewish deli staples (chopped chicken livers, corned beef, smoked whitefish, matzoh ball soup, stuffed cabbage, Reuben sandwiches) as well as every comfort food classic you can imagine. Roast chicken, meat loaf, spaghetti with marinara sauce, and a couple dozen other entrees are served for lunch and dinner, with only about a $1 price discrepancy from afternoon to evening. Breakfast is served all day. The adjacent bakery serves all sorts of breads, pastries, and desserts.

Worlds FINEST!
By MZROBIN007 on 07/02/2008
Canter's CORNED BEEF and PASTRAMI is the BEST in the country. If you are looking for a juicy, succulent piled high pastrami/corned beef sandwich which is very affordable...count on Canter's Deli in the heart of Los Angeles. Aside from their world famous sandwiches, you can find a variety of salads and complete meals to satisfy everyones appetite! Let's not forgot Canter's matza ball soup (homemade with only fresh vegetables and chicken). A meal in itself!! There desserts are to kill for...especially the creamy cheesecakes that are made daily. So if you are looking for delicious deli foods (plus a variety of all kinds of foods with an extensive menu) at AFFORDABLE prices, visit Canter's Deli (2 block north of the famous Grove). You will not be dissapointed!! I strongly suggest you save room for dessert since all their bakery goods are made daily on the premises. No wonder Canter's doors have been open almost 80 years and open 24 hrs to meet the needs of southern californians!
