Though it's touted as a celebrity hangout, this Fairfax landmark is actually not the best place to stargaze. For one thing, the deli is so busy and the dining room so expansive, you might not spot a celeb even if one were in attendance. For another, the scene is much more neighborhood deli than hipster hang. People of all ages, income tax brackets, industries, and proclivities dine here, and customers pay little attention to their neighbors. Conversation is lively, but high-backed booths give you a sense of privacy. The dress code is incredibly casual, even by LA standards -- pajamas and slippers often seem to be the norm. The menu is vast and includes all New York/Jewish deli staples (chopped chicken livers, corned beef, smoked whitefish, matzoh ball soup, stuffed cabbage, Reuben sandwiches) as well as every comfort food classic you can imagine. Roast chicken, meat loaf, spaghetti with marinara sauce, and a couple dozen other entrees are served for lunch and dinner, with only about a $1 price discrepancy from afternoon to evening. Breakfast is served all day. The adjacent bakery serves all sorts of breads, pastries, and desserts.

GREAT FOOD WITH RETRO DECOR
By grazianogs on 10/28/2006
I read some other review, saying this is not a good place for a date!!! My response” are u crazy!!!!. Just the retro decor, is a sure conversation starter. Quiet frankly one would have to be quite dull, to not be able to appreciate a place like this. Granted not everyone is in to this, or appreciates it. But most people, 8 out of 10, seem very intrigued when I have taken them there. The retro decor ambiance, is really cool, since it’s almost all original, and not redone in some late 80s early 90s pastel colors. The food is your typical Jewish deli, but better than you would expect. The servers are great. Those whom want their hinny kissed here, go somewhere else. This is real food, with real service. Not some pretentious artsy fartsy foo foo place.

Your reviewer forgot to mention the best thing about late-night Canter's: Bella Haig! She's been the night "Bubby" and a fixture at Canter's for many, many years. Bella will make your late night nosh a delight!

the best waitress ever worked here. Look up Robin B. or short Robin if you want to be served with class and humor.
