On an eastern stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard a curbside valet awaits guests entering a red cement structure known as the Dragonfly. A premier dance and live music venue, the nightlife haven incorporates such staple events as the glam rock Pretty Ugly Club or fetish-friendly Miss Kitty's Parlour into a destination for the slightly wilder twenty- to thirtysomething set. Music styles can range from '80s dance to reggae and Jamaican, with live music acts on their Los Angeles stopovers often taking to the stage. The atmosphere is cool and crisp, the decor sleek and simple, with a concrete bar covered with decorative, eponymous dragonflies, and the lounge often is just as packed as the dance floor. Unlike at other venues guarded by the velvet-rope gestapo, Dragonfly seeks to include rather than isolate its clientele. While on a busier night a line will form at the door, entry is almost never a question of attitude.
