To live in Los Angeles and not experience this venerable Mexican dining institution at least once is a tragedy. The family-owned cafe first opened on Western Blvd in 1927 (ancient by LA standards) and has since given rise to four satellite restaurants in Santa Monica, Pasadena, La Habra and Irvine. Faithful patrons come for the hearty Albondigas (meatball soup), piquant Chile con Carne and copious combination platters. What they're best known for, perhaps, is their signature green corn tamales, which are in season between May and October only. Some say "forget the food" and come solely to sample the landmark margarita menu, which offers nine different potable concoctions to choose from. The restaurant claims to be the world's largest consumer of Jose Cuervo Tequila, and judging from the festive atmosphere on weekends, they're probably not lying. Appropriate for large parties, families or casual meals, El Cholo Caf promises un buen tiempo for all. Expect a wait most nights.

El Cholo - Old Faithful
By DK Leavitt on 07/25/2008
I have been an El Cholo customer for over 60 years and it has been the standard for Mexican food in Los Angeles: not the best, not gourmet, but always good, sometimes better, never poor. The atmosphere is a big plus and the crowd always seems to be happy. There is usually a wait for tables. I think the original, on Western Avenue, is better than the Santa Monica branch - but both are OK. I have not been to the others. (There is also an El Cholo fast food place at LAX, but it is not really an El Cholo experience.)

Distgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By louieg70 on 09/04/2007
I was looking for a good place to have Mexican Food. Needless to say this place is disgusting! The Food & Service were horrible. I mean Taco Bell is better than this garbage. The food was cold, watered down, and practically had no taste. Beans looked like they had been soaked in lard. Rice was nasty. Chips in Nachos were staled. Horrible place to dine! How in the world did this place rate #1 is what I would like to know.
