Smack in the heart of Griffith Park is an animal attraction that never fails to enthrall its 1.5 million annual visitors. From toddling tots to tenacious teens to grandparents, everyone finds an animal to love at the 113-acre zoological garden. Small wonder -- it's home to 1,200 exotic inhabitants. The list of animals has grown steadily since the park opened in 1966, and continues to grow even today. The latest expansions are the $11 million Children's Discovery Center, the Pachyderm Forest, which simulates a rainforest riverbank, and the still-under-construction new gorilla habitat. Primates' numerous friends and fans should visit both Red Ape Rain Forest and Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountain. Bird shows and Sea Lion Feedings always draw big crowds. The park recently became an accredited Botanical Garden, too. Pack a lunch, and when you're ready for a break, visit Play Park at the top of the zoo.

Zoo Upgrade
By char725292 on 07/28/2006
Just to let everyone, The LA Zoo is in a re-construction phase that will take years to complete, so a lot of areas might be closed for your viewing on the day you go. You need to keep in mind that the animal you are not seeing is getting a new home constructed for THEM! It takes time for great things to happen. I have read other reviews complaining about not getting a lid and straw with their drinks, this is done for the safety of the animals, you or your child might not drop a straw or lid into an animal habit, but someelse might, if an animal got a hold of it and tired to eat the staw, it could be life threating. Yes the LA Zoo is a great place to visit, but we need to remember that we are just vistors for a day or how often you visit, for the animals it is their home, we are being invited to see and spend time in their home.

Good but lots of construction
By jimwito on 05/21/2005
Currently the zoo is under MAJOR renovations so a variety of things not open (like gorillas and koala house) or in repair. Some animals only come out when they want to. The pangolin (spiny anteater - only one in the USA) can only be seen in the nursery at feeding time because it hides. Giraffes and Chimps always fun. Snow leopards and wolves exhibits are great. Lots of smaller exhibits for upclose viewing. Plenty of variety. Lots of walking with some hills but most zoos are that way (you want steep - Birds of Prey climb to Polar Bear area at San Diego Zoo). There is a safari shuttle that takes you around the zoo (I haven't ridden it though) that is an extra charge. Will be much better after the renovations.

Where Did the Birds Go??
By avinam on 01/17/2005
The aviary is a big disappointment and there was not sign that the bird show had been cancelled for the day. We came from Orange County to see the bird show and there was no information on the recording or web informing us of such. Also the prices do not compensate for fewer animals and on going construction. Whose idea was it to make people hike in up hill?
