A multi-million dollar expansion in the 1990's turned the Redondo Beach Pier into a mega-pier, supporting a wide range of venues and activities. There are sections lined with shops and restaurants and areas where you can take a leisurely stroll watch to waves without encountering anything except pier fishermen and comfortable benches. The Fisherman's Wharf section has shops, snack bars and full service restaurants. Seafood is the specialty and large tanks of crabs and lobsters can be seen in the windows of several establishments. There are boutiques selling hats and beach ware and several shops specializing in pearl jewelry. Numerous specialty shops stock collectibles and souvenirs, and the back room of one store has a huge preserved great white shark on display. The International Pier is home to shops and restaurants featuring international fare. The Fun Factory is located here and has video and arcade games as well as vintage rides. On weekends visitors can take a scenic boat ride to get a close up look at sea lions, pelicans and other sea life. -- Nancy Sams
