LA bashers claim there's no history in the city, but this Valley landmark isn't paying attention. Since it opened in 1954 the Bear Pit has served up its own brand of barbecue without gutting its interior, going glitzy, or revamping the menu. Inside the inconspicuous, low-slung building, sawdust covers the floor and all tables have a trademark vegetable tray -- carrots, hot peppers and pickles in ice water. The BBQ is sauce-driven and no different than when Eisenhower was president. Long-timers love the beef or pork sandwiches on thick garlic bread and the Bear Pit Special, which combines beef and ham. In the end, it's mostly about the sauce, however, which is sold by the bottle at the front counter. Service is friendly and the atmosphere is a bit like an indoor picnic. There are special menus, as well, for children and seniors.

INCREDIBLE, but....
By JenLen10 on 07/10/2008
Excellent bbq sandwiches on garlic toast. I crave them all the time. Had to stop going though, because my husband needs a lighter alternative for his heart. They stink at that! They don't serve a bbq chicken meal. When they do that, we'll be back!

I have eaten more of there great BBQ than I can remember , I used to buy, 3 of there sandwiches just to take to work for my lunches durning the week.. I remember sitting out on the patio, and counting the people come and go from there when I was a kid, it was the best in its time for more than 40 years, it has slipped a little over the last years but it's still the best, in LA for my money. No hype, no glitter, no BS I dont live in the valley anymore , but when I drive through I always plan a stop there for lunch and R&R,

Real BBQ
By okelly71 on 07/06/2008
This place is a joke please do not waste your money. Save it and go to Memphis and eat real BBQ at places like Corky's, Interstate BBQ, Rendevous, Germantown Commissary, or even a Top's BBQ. Unless you like frozen onion rings, frozen french fries, sliced pork sandwiches and poor service go ahead and waste your money.

Joshua Tree BBQ lover
By CactusnutinJTCA on 07/05/2008
Ive been going to the Bear Pit since i was 3 in 1956 and I have never found a better BBQ place yet and Ive tried alot of places. Tennessee Ernie Ford used to eat there and I saw him several times when I was a kid. I can think of no other reason i would want to leave Joshua Tree Ca and go to LA than eat at the Bear Pit. Its really worth the 125 mile drive. Stop by and enjoy, you wont go home hungry.
