When it comes to its cuisine, America is all about comfort: the glistening, gooey mess of mac and cheese, a stackable BLT, mountains of flapjacks oozing with syrup... and let's not get started on the apple pie. La Canada's Dish restaurant does its best to live up to the American ideal, doling out plates of cornmeal Jonnycakes and applewood smoked sausage at breakfast time, cold roast beef sandwiches for lunch and grilled pork chops with spicy apple chutney for dinner. The menu is kept simple, with the ingredients limited to what you would expect to find in the well-stocked fridge of a Middle American family -- chicken breasts, top round hamburger, hunks of bleu cheese and eggs-a-plenty. Similarly, Dish's atmosphere is kept remarkably comfortable, with the staff dressed in khakis and painted wood tables filling the dining room. If you're in the mood for a taste of pure Americana, keep Dish in mind, because for home-style treats, they really dish it out. -- Jesse Torres
