Just a claw's throw from the Santa Monica Pier's looming Ferris wheel stands The Lobster, an ocean lookout that draws crustacean-crazy tourists and natives alike. From the outside, the place looks more beach shack that seafood bistro, with its blocky white facade, gaudy red insignia and sloping roof. Certainly, beach shack would have been an apt description 80 years ago when the seaside fixture first went up, but now the destination's a grand affair that seats over 150, many of whom confess to be Maine transplants nostalgic for a taste of their childhood summers on the coast. Under the direction of former Water Grill chef Allyson Thurber, the eponymous eatery excels at more than just lobster. For instance, the North Carolina black bass on a bed of mash earns consistently high marks. The jumbo lump crab cakes, fried oysters and seared prawns also make the grade, as do the tempting Maine sea scallops Saint-Jacques, buttressed by spinach, grilled tomatoes and asparagus. The Lobster hardly needs its neon sign to attract the throngs that it does. Between the superb shellfish and the swinging bar scene, the place overflows all week long, so reservations are a must.

Perfect Quick Choice Dinner
By Lshelmir on 06/27/2008
Maybe 2002-2005 was a bad stretch because I recently went and everything was perfect, from the valet to the takeout. After comming back from a cruise we decided to see the sights of S.M. and find something decent to eat. We pulled in to the lobster (without reservations) and was told that it would be a 45 Min. wait, so we left, and called to make a reservation, which the next available was 45 minutes. We arrived about 15 minutes early and was seated immediately at what seemed like the best table, a corner view. we all tried different things from cippino, sole, and halibut, all spectacular, and enoght to fill us up, and have leftovers, even the takeout desert (strawberry shortcake) was great, they seperated the strawberrys and cream from the cake so it wouldnt get soggy. perfect.

The Lobster is amazing and I love it! The lunches are amazing and the view is gorgeous! They are doing a brunch on Sunday and have the best Bloody Mary with a huge shrimp on it!

My husband and I tried the Lobster and let me tell you it was by far one of the best meals we've ever had. We used to go to the Palms for Lobster but no more. it's The Lobster from now on. I can't wait to go back and the service was impecable.

getting better and better
By dervishkat on 03/21/2006
I have been dining at the Lobster from day one, and it continues to get better and better,,the food is always great, especially considering how busy it is all the time....where at timea a bit loud it is a greeat fun place to meed frioends for a drink after work, have some oysters or a big fat Spiny lobster. I suggest that this is a place that you could go for any occation...but lunch is the best..great view and it is a bit more quiet..and niight it really gets rocking with all the beautiful people
