One could postulate that, when this deli opened in 1945, it was the epitome of chic, but... nah, probably not. Too much brown Naugahyde... The lighting wreaks havoc on complexions, and a velvet rope would look positively silly outside the front door. So, not chic then, but always a hit with everyone from celebrities to bi-coastal bagel-noshers to tourists. (Though you're a lot more likely to see tourists than celebrities, especially if you show up in the evening.) Sit-down diners can feast on omelets, blintzes, bagels or eggs Benedict for breakfast; cold meat platters, blue-plate specials like short ribs and frankfurters, or Old World specialties like kishkas and kashas (no kidding) later in the day. Over on the deli side (which actually only takes up about a quarter of the room), display cases hold roasts, heat-and-eat side dishes, an entire cured tongue (ewwww!) and other goodies. A corner display in front holds baked goods and pastries. Stressed-out-and-proud-of-it industry hacks shout things like, "Wait! Don't I get SIDE DISHES with that?" and "I told you to HEAT IT UP!" Deli workers display as much self-control and savoir faire as could possibly be expected under the circumstances.

Nate'n Al's - My neigborhood deli
By DK Leavitt on 07/25/2008
I live just a couple of blocks away and Nate'n Al's has been spoiling me for over 40 years! The food is so great that it is silly even to notice the "coffee shop" decor. Prices aren't bad either - but the meat is great. They have absolutely the best chopped liver in the world! Heaven forbid that they ever close!

ITS OK, NOT THE BEST, BUT THE QUALITY IS TOP NOTCH. THEIR CATERING AND DELI TAKE OUT KEEP THEM AFLOAT. NOW RUN BY THE 2 GRANDSONS, THEY TRY. NEEDS A MAKEOVER INSIDE THOUGH. SOME OF THE OLD TIMER DAY WAITRESS ARE MOUTHY AND RUDE AND NEED TO GO, BUT THEY WILL BE THERE TILL THEY CAN'T WALK ANYMORE,

Deli doesn't get any better. The food is terrific, take the atmosphere for what it is and have fun with the waitresses. Nate 'n Al has truly withstood the test of time. Just order a Hollywood sandwich and die happy.
