East Coast transplants are, almost to a person, obsessed with New York-style pizza and convinced that the West Coast offers nothing like it. But even they can't help but like Abbot's, though it pains them almost visibly to admit it. Meanwhile everyone else, without seeing quite what all the fuss is about, appreciates the eatery for the obvious reason: You can get a full meal and a soda for about $6. Slices cost a couple bucks and come in a variety of combinations including barbecued chicken and five onion. The cashier can even stick your slice in the oven and get it all crisp-ified if you want. Or, if you're with other people, order a pie of your very own -- either a house specialty or a do-it-yourself. Unlike many of LA's favorite pizzerias, this one isn't afraid to go gourmet. Toppings include portobello mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes; you can order olive or garlic pesto instead of the typical red sauce; and there are six crust options including the famous bagel crust. By contrast, the dining area is a tiny, dingy little hole with just a few counter seats and rickety outdoor tables. If it weren't papered with awards and crowded with customers, you might not ever know of the greasy, garlicky, cheesy, veggie delights that wait within.

After reading some reviews a friend and I stopped in for a good pizza. Totally disappointed. If this is what californians call good pizza I'll just have to start ordering from Chicago. Burnt crust. 2nd rate mozzerella, etc. not good. But then again everyones taste varies. Still searching for Jersey/Chicago pizza...and don't tell me its the water that counts in the dough!! Viva Lou Malnati's in Chicago and all the little mom and pop pizzerias
