Funky, trendy Silverlake is the perfect home for this intimate New American bistro --especially since, food-wise, there's not much in the way of competition nearby. This is one of a handful of destination restaurants on LA's artsy but unkempt East Side. Marshall Blair, formerly of Water Grill, brings gourmet sensibilities to the kitchen and a friendly, personalized approach to customer service. He's created a handsome, inviting venue where you can celebrate a birthday, play tour guide to out-of-town visitors, or bring your sweetheart for a dressed-down, spur-of-the-moment dinner date. With its white tablecloths, brickwork and warm, persimmon-toned walls, it strikes the perfect balance between casual and chic. Denim-clad, henna-haired locals brush shoulders with well groomed, black-clad hipsters. Signature menu items include braised beef short ribs, tuna tartare, and any of the expertly executed seafood entrees. In addition to a compact but interesting wine list, there's a full bar, a wide range of Belgian and German beers and a selection of specialty teas.

Great Food
By tut4445 on 09/19/2005
We came to Blair's on a Friday night for dinner, not knowing what to expect. The place has an alsmost hidden facade. I thought it might be a bar. The food was amazing and the place looked great. An excellent wine list! I recommend the Salmon with lentils. The portions are medium to small, a relief from the gargantuan portions that are usually served these days. The cuisine had an exquisite display, for a casual restaurant. The service was friendly, prompt.

prepare to starve
By paulhllywood on 04/20/2004
Place looked great and service was adequate. Portions, however, were downright miniscule. I've heard of nouveau, but this was absurd. The salad appetizer was about a cup's worth of lettuce (yes, I believe they measured it), but the real zinger was the entre- my dinner partner and I had to do all we could not to break out into laughter when my fish was placed in front of me. We didn't order dessert and headed to get pizza about an hour later. If you want a lot of pretension and little substance, this is your place.

Was the long wait worth it?
By cataisle on 03/07/2004
Last Friday three of us had an 8:15 reservation, but were not seated until 9:15. Maybe that night many of the diners were just taking too long to eat. I had the roasted chicken which was tasty, but dry. We had fun while we waited at the bar. We did receive apologies for the wait as well as complimentary wine.
