In ShortBalboa, the Grafton Hotel's colorful postmodern steakhouse, has been a Sunset Strip favorite since 2001. The latest L.A.-area location--its name shortened to Boa--occupies the former Crocodile Cafe space. Like the original, the newer branch caters to a hip crowd with vibrant decor and sexy lighting, but features its own distinct beach vibe. The nearly identical steak-centric menu includes traditional cuts prepared with the restaurant's signature sauces, plus an expanded selection of seafood and wines by the glass.

I went here last Wednesday and had the best time. The service was great and they were VERY accomodating to my veggie friend. The food was awesome and beautiful. The oysters were fresh and delicious. Our server recommended an excellent bottle of wine and it was so good that we drank two! Have fun!

People who don't think BOA is a great steak house...obviously don't eat out enough. I have been to every steak house in Los Angeles and the atmosphere and the food are 2nd to none.

Food doesn't justify the price

I have eaten at Boa 3 times now and I really don't know why. The first time the service was wonderful but the steak didn't even come close to my expectations. My wife's crab legs were pretty scant when it comes to how many were served. The steak tasted like the first steaks I cooked in my stove at home in the oven on broil when first learning how to cook! The second time everything was so-so. The third time I took my mom, wife, and little sister. Again, same results but this time with very poor service. I even tried the steak rubs after the first time and really the steak was not any better. We ate at bucca de beppo the next night and my mother told me that buca was ten times better than boa! lol. Within respect to vastly different menus from place to place. BOA is very nice inside, I'll award points for that. BOA also does this thing with sparklers at your table for birthdays and cotton candy desert. I'll give creativity points for that. That still only brings BOA to a D- in my book, just short of totally failing. I might be new to the "fine dinning" game but I have eaten at high end steak houses in Miami, Cleveland, and Columbus, OH that were ten times better than this place. The best steaks I have ever had were in Cleveland at XO Primesteaks. Followed by Cameron Mitchell's in Columbus. Oh, and I ate at the the Luxor Steak house in Vegas, forget that place as well. So how did steaks back east get to be soooooo much better than steaks from a high end steak house in the second largest city in the US? Who knows? Moral of the story: Save your money and go somewhere else if you want a great steak.
