It seems the smaller and more ramshackle a Mexican joint is, the more authentic people claim it to be. By those standards, Loteria! Grill gets five ponchos for its bare-bones food stand, buried deep inside the Farmer's Market. But loyalists swear the food far outdoes the dcor. Burritos come packed with shredded beef, chicken or pork and you can't go wrong with the mole or albondigas in chipotle. You may also be surprised to find not-so-traditional fresh cactus and roasted corn succotash on the chalkboard menu above the cashier. Special GPS tip: If you're roaming around the market, trying to find this elusive joint, just look for the vibrant red and yellow colors of Mexican postage stamps that surround the perimeter; that, or the hungry zig-zagging line forming the corner. Oh yeah, no soft drinks here, but the watermelon juice (sandia) or the Mexican lime aid (limon) is worth a slurp.

Good, very traditional Mexican Fast Food
By E1D2P3 on 05/15/2008
I've eaten here while shopping and it's very traditional fair. Meat, Cilantro, Onions and shell (depending on Burrito or soft shell tacos), beans and optional. Personally, however, I like Pipiripau’s in Burbank which didn't even make the list. There also used to be a great stand on 2nd Street which got displaced by Metro Rail, that was open all night and they had a great burrito! Most people don't understand a Mexican burrito or taco. When it's solid meat it's beef or chicken or pork chopped up often before your eyes and slapped on a shell with Cilantro and Onions added. That's the default. If you can they will put Colorado or green sauce on, if you want they will put pinto beans or black beans and rice. But the default animal in the Mexican world is choice of meat, shell (flour for burrito, two corn for taco), Cilantro and onions. Everything else is Taco Bell or Alcapulco's! And that's Mexican food done PC by conservative Americans!
