In ShortBoomerangs, Aussie flags, kangaroo portraits and faux aboriginal art honor the homeland's wilderness, but Outback delivers a polished version of rusticity with varnished blond-wood booths with matching wainscoting and casually uniformed waitstaff. Besides more than a half-dozen cuts of steak, diners can pick from large-portioned entrees like ribs, chops and shrimp or chicken "on the barbie." The Bloomin' Onion, a large onion dipped in batter and deep-fried, is an appetizer with a following.

In general, $25 well spent. Make reservations 40 minutes in advance. A $19 Rockhampton Ribeye steak dinner includes soup or salad, and a choice of potato or steamed veggies. The dining room is dark but there's a sufficient light over each table. I could've done without the speaker music (late-'80s pop), but it wasn't overly loud. The side salad was very generous, including more tomatoes than I usually get, two cheeses and gourmet croutons. Black bread is nice and warm. Rib-eye steak is very generous @ 14 oz. BONELESS! I ordered 'well-done' and it came exactly like that. Juicy, perfectly marbled, kinda smoky. Garlic mashed potatoes could've used more garlic. The waitress Tania was very polite, friendly and attentive, and despite the full house this Sunday late evening, the food didn't keep me waiting long. I don't often spend this much on dinner, but I walked out a satisfied customer.
