Consistently ranked among the best sub shops in LA, this Burbank institution has been crafting sandwich art since the mid 1950s. Subs served the "Santoro way" start with fresh Italian buns shipped to the store in bundles every morning. Traditional cold-cut sandwiches are loaded up with deli meats and provolone and garnished with an East Coast blend of pickle, onion, tomatoes and Italian spices. And that's just the first act. The denouement is a generous drizzling of Santoro's secret recipe sandwich oil, which gives the sub its signature taste. Cold subs come in a variety of meats -- capicola, mortadella, turkey, pepperoni, tuna and roast beef -- both in a small bun (by name only) and large, which is ample enough to feed three. Hot submarines are simply habit-forming, including plush pastrami, meatball, sausage and a very popular grilled peppersteak and egg. Service can be curt during the rush, but regulars get treated like royalty. Limited indoor and outdoor seating is available, but Santoro's takeout is king. If you do decide to stay in, however, expect no frills -- this is a paper napkin joint all the way. -- Mikael Romano
