Assuming the main real estate of a plaza chock full of other Chinese cafes, restaurants and businesses, Shau May is a favorite with the local late-night diners and Asians in the LA area that are in-the-know about cheap, Chinese dining. With literally hundreds of a la carte items on the wall menu (from the "thousand year old eggs" to basic chow mein), and more beverages and desserts on the adjacent wall menu, it's easy to get overwhelmed at Shau May. Especially if you don't speak Mandarin. But everything here is super affordable, making first-tries safe bets. We recommend the three-item or one-item combos, where you pick from hot vegetable, meat and tofu dishes at the counter, and come with rice and broth. Favorites include spicy mabo tofu, steamed chinese broccoli and soy sauce chicken wings. For dessert -- which you must leave room for -- visit the shaved ice counter and pick from a variety of sweet Asian treats topped with ice and condensed milk. Shaved ice fans (addicts?) call it the perfect treat for a hot day or forget-the-weather late night craving.

Beijing Meat Pie

It's the best meat pie in the world. It's crispy outside and meaty inside. It's like a Chinese pizza pie but much much tastier. CHSIE

By bcfortune on 05/22/2005
NO AMERICAN YOUR BURGER YOUR WAY - I ASK FOR NO VEGTABLES - NOTHING - JUST THE MEAT AND THEY PUT SAUCE ON IT. I CANCEL THE ORDER BECAUSE THEY'LL JUST FINGER WIPE OFF THE SAUCE AND BRING YOU THE SAME THING. IN YOUNG DONG GARDEN IN ARCADIA & WONDERFUL IN ROWLAND HEIGHTS THE SAME THING - MOST ASIAN RESTAURANT/SUPERMARKET DON'T KNOW WHAT SERVICE MEAN - 99 RANCH MARKET BEND MY CHINESE CELERY INTO THE BAG - I DON'T MIND IT STICKING OUT OF THE BAG - JUST PLEASE DON'T BEND/BREAK/FORCE/FIT IN THE BAG - UNDERSTAND? NO? IT'S CUSTOMER'S MONEY CUSTOMER'S FOOD - CUSTOMER'S WAY. see? no? THEY HAVE THIS ATTITUDE LIKE - THIS IS HOW I PACK, COOK, TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT. YOU CAN'T SPECIFY DARK/WHITE MEAT EITHER - YOU BUY WHAT THEY SELL YOU. TALK ABOUT KOREAN BBQ, YAKITORI, CHOW MEIN, SOUP NAZI ...

Come to where the flavor is...

Shau May is also home to the finest beverage in the world: the "Lychee Nut Smoothie". For you boba afficionados out there, you know that most smoothies are made with syrups. At this fantastic restaurant they scoop lychee right out of the shaved ice topping area and blend it to perfection. The stawberry-banana shake also get props, and the avacodo smoothie is truly sum'n else.

Come to shaved ice country!
By blobagirl on 07/21/2004
Everytime I go to Shau May, it's for the shaved ice -- which can be like 3 times in a week and I live in LA. However, almost everytime me and my friend have this same conversation: "Gosh the 3-item combo sure looks good and it's only 4 bucks! Should we just get that instead?" 'Nuff said.
