Expensive, Lacking Ambiance, but Good Food.
First of all when you look at their online menu you see no prices. That should be a clue. Most entrees are $28.50. Appetizers are equally expensive. The food however was very interesting and tasty. I had the baby green salad and lamb chops. I asked for rare chops, but got closer to medium rare. The mint and garlic sauce on the chops blended well and was great. The scalloped potatoes on the plate were two scalloped potatoes --- an amazingly small portion. I had Shiro's signature dessert, Sweet Wontons, which was good and an ample portion.
One of the older Latino bus boys, was intrusive and abrupt when attending to the table. Kind of like a bull in a china shop. The service was very good however, from the waiter.
The ambiance was certainly lacking for a restaurant where the prices are this high. The dining space consists of a large room with very high ceilings, divided by a very plain looking dividing wall about six to seven feet high. The windows have blinds on them.

Things have changed, space was added and the prices reflect that. The food is still wonderful but you won't be full. the waiters are not from culinary school. Actors/professional waiters working for a living,. They have priced themselves out of local customers and in this city thats hard to do.

Brought quite a few friends over, and everybody thanked me. The best catfish ever! Pretty expensive, but worth it if celebrating something real special.

Possibly the best food on the west coast. Very small easy-to-miss place, you must have reservations and it is not likely to be cheap, but the appetizers, entrees, sides, deserts are all incredibly well designed and executed, and the service was perfect (helpful, unobtrusive but observant, informed, warm and respectful of guests; I think the waiters are select chefs in training at the local culinary institute). I bring my spouse here for anniversaries; my friend proposed here; if I win the lottery, I will enjoy a nice quiet celebratory meal here. If you know lobsters should be sweet and tender, that the knife work on a fish or vegetable CAN enhance the flavor/texture, and that fresh fresh ingredients are key, you will be very happy here. Dress ranges from dress-casual to dress-dress. Beyond yummy.
