Opened by a trio of sushi chefs and graduates from the Matsuhisa hall of fish, Wa occupies the unlikeliest of locations: a mini-mall anchored by a 7-Eleven convenience store. Wa's food exudes a flamboyance that is relatively absent in the atmosphere, with a bevy of creative Japanese dishes such as the Chilean sea bass with eggplant and the popular Spanish mackerel served up alongside singular sushi rolls like the delicious toro or giant clam sliver cloaked in a shawl of seaweed. Even if the sushi is priced singly instead of in pairs, who can deny the chutzpah of a sushi joint that actually has the smelt eggs to put 'fois gras' on the menu? Matsuhisa faithfuls may recognize other ballsy concoctions such as the broiled Santa Barbara spot prawn smothered by ochre sea urchin in a silken beurre blanc or the salmon roll served with cocktail sauce. As with most sushi joints, ask the affable chefs what's best that specific day.

I've been going to WA since it opened and I just love it there. The chefs are funny and attentive and their concoctions are delicate and delicious, wherein they do exceedingly well with contrast and textures and always have surprising news for the tastebuds. The location gives you a great southern perspective of L.A. and makes your cares vanish and you escape into the vista. The chefs are talented and very welocming to all. 1/2 the price of Matsuhisa.

My wife and two friends went there on Friday based on the reviews seen here. The sushi was fantastic! As good as the other reviews were, the restaurant was actually better then expected (and I expected alot). I will now be a regular.

possibly the best little secret in LA for fresh sushi. The presentation is pure art and tasty! Toro, sea bass, tuna, and crabs are all wonderful. Must try green tea flan! Great atmosphere and not too crowded with snobby people.
