Chef Yujean Kang made the most of the time he spent in the Chinese provinces, learning the particulars of regional dishes and juggling them to create a menu that melds the best of Thai, Cantonese and Mandarin. But Kang's not afraid to experiment beyond the traditional -- Chinese polenta being one of the witty results. The Taiwanese Kang's original restaurant in Pasadena has the feel of an Asian bistro, with white-drape tablecloths and an extensive wine list filled with German, Italian and Californian selections. As for the food, the "Ants on a Tree" -- noodles in spicy black sesame topped with sauteed beef -- is one of Kang's most popular dishes. The menu also includes a Peking duck, which must be ordered a day in advance, and the honey-mustard shrimp. The miniature dumplings win raves with their hot chili oil and leafy garnish, while the chicken in plum wine with crunchy ham and silk squash is one of the menu's more intriguing gourmet offerings. For those wary of gimmicky-sounding entrees like the "Picture in the Snow," a fusion of chicken, duck and fresh veggies, there are a few Italian fusion options, including risotto or minestrone soup. -- Jeremy Horelick

Great food.

First of all, the headline has the name backwards.. It is Yujean Kang's. Secondly, coming from Boston, I find it tough to find Chinese food on the west coast that apporaches the level of the northeast. This is one of the best. Medium size, very nice inside, pleasant service, good prices and GREAT food. I have been there about a dozen times, and every dish has been one I would have again.

A Farce
By chungtachicken on 02/24/2005
Back in my younger days as a highly impressionable 16 y/o, I had the privilege of possessing something that not too many of my peers had: a job. I figured it would be my opportunity to shine, excel, and at the same time, earn some spending money. My cousin (who had been working there for almost a year at the time) had spoken highly of me to the owners to get me the job; I did not want to let him down. I quickly learned that in an environment delimited by the prominent actors/actresses of Hollywierd, the price for service surpasses the amount of money that one may spend for it. I worked my proverbial butt off for Yujean and Yvonne (wife/co-owner) only to have them moderate my hours in hopes that I would quit. Ultimately, my congeniality, sincerity, and affable personality with the customers did not overshadow the speed at which I worked. As Yvonne abruptly put it, "You're not being efficient." Sure, the hispanic workers were so quick to rob the customers of their last morsel, but seldom did they understand or tend to the needs of the customer. I was disillusioned because I was giving the customers what I would want from a waiter/server: personal attention...to let them know that I care about what they want. My service to this establishment lasted 9 months...but those 9 months prepared me for the reality of and corruption of the food service industry.

Don't like fusion/mix/dreamed up dishes. Prefer honest/straight/true/ traditional/real Chinese, or Italian, French, Indian, Thai, etc. for that matter. Food, decor, music, staff all must be authentic. Really hate NOT THIS NOT THAT, not here not there.
