"Eclectic" doesn't do justice in describing the decor at this popular steakhouse, where owners Leonard and Janet Schmock have been wowing customers since 1953 with steaks voted number one in the Midwest. A stuffed 38-pound muskellunge (that's a really big pike) greets customers at the bar and holds court over a scattered melange of knickknacks and tchotchkes. Most eye-catching is the food, however, particularly the fillets, which have been compared by one reviewer to "two big fists stacked atop one another." The steaks are served as simply as possible: on a dented metal platter with a flourish of garnish and a knife large enough to hunt the animal that the steak came from. But don't touch the platter -- it's been heated for hours in a 500-degree oven, which is how that cracklin' sizzle happens when a steak is plopped on it. They serve chicken and seafood, including broiled African lobster tail and Canadian walleyed pike (not the guy up on the wall), but you know the real reason you came here, and it rhymes with "lake." The bar is open until midnight, but the restaurant is closed by 10pm, and all day Tuesdays and Sundays -- perhaps to give your arteries a rest.

never again

I thought I had gone back to the seventies. This restaurant hasn't updated since they opened. The food would have been acceptable if I were eating at Applebee's and paying only $15 for a filet. But i paid $40 for a week long frozen steak( that came with complementary A1 steak sauce, yummy). I would get a burger at McDonald's before I went back to this restaurant.

overpriced mediocrity

Steak was tender, yet flavorless, $4 for grilled onions?, $4 for flavorless grilled mushrooms, does the chef have no seasonings? A little garlic would go a long way......Waste of money. I don't mind expensive if it's good.....pass this one by.

OLD SCHOOL SUPPER CLUB
By madbunnee on 05/05/2007
We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Smoky's. It's an old school supper club with an eclectic staff that obviously have been there a long time. The bar scene was fun and the food was great. Good wine list, awesome Martinis. We'll be back.

This was a very nice place. One because the food was great, a little pricey yes, but still tastey nonetheless. Second the waiting wasn't as bad as we thought it be. we came in, had some great burgers, then left all in about a 45 minute time span. Not the best, but not too bad either.
