Beauty Shop Restaurant   

Well-known as an eclectic restaurant serving unique dishes ranging from Caribbean-flavored prime rib to tacos to order, Karen Blockman Carrier's Beauty Shop quickly turns into a hip, upscale, yet casual bar after the dinner hour has passed. It's not hard to get into the fun, fashionable spirit of the place -- the waitresses sport bouffant wigs, and the decor is modern and retro. The kitschy hairstyles and uniforms do not extend to the patrons, as the bar crowd consists of some of Memphis' finest young movers and shakers, relentlessly socializing. Those wanting to relax away from the crowd can usually find a table to themselves as well. Mixologist David Parks has brought the same energy and creativity to the drink menu that Carrier put into the food; his wine list is extensive yet surprisingly affordable, and the sangria is a must. -- Eric Friedl
