The Unicorn was once Milwaukee's hottest rock club. Located in the basement of the Sydney Hih, it attracted many bands whose names read as a who's who of 1990s alternative rock. Everyone from Nirvana to The Mighty Mighty Bosstones played there. Now, Gus Hosseini, the former owner of The Unicorn, is attempting an upscale downtown nightclub with a Latin-theme. Club Belize, located on Jackson Street, features a concept somewhat new to Milwaukee -- the idea of a membership card. Becoming a member of the club isn't required, but it will ease the way past the club's bouncers and its dress code. Club Belize, in trying to appeal to a more upscale clientele, has a dress code that requires patrons to dress up -- i.e., no baggy clothes or athletic apparel. The interior of the club is a whimsical take on Latin culture, with beats imported directly from South of the border. The Belize offers plenty of chances to get a tropical buzz, with a wide selection of margaritas with high price tags. Time will tell whether Milwaukee warms to the membership concept or the hot equatorial style of Club Belize.
