If North Avenue is the heart of Riverwest, then Center Street can be considered the neighborhood's soul. Center features several incredible music clubs and a small handful of adventurous restaurants. With Club Timbuktu, the block manages to get both in one place. Club Timbuktu opened in the waning days of 2004, offering an African take on breakfast, lunch and dinner. The owners made a name for themselves with Lulu's African Cafe on Oakland. With Club Timbuktu, they've injected a more vibrant style into an African restaurant. The menu is pan-African, taking meals from throughout the continent and sprinkling European and American influences. Club Timbuktu even offers vegan-friendly selections. As the sun sets, the restaurant transforms into a club, where the focus is no longer having a meal. Instead, DJs will spin records, or Club Timbuktu will feature live performances by touring acts and local musicians.
