Metro Bar & Cafe   

Opened as the Mariner building in 1937, Hotel Metro remains a stellar example of Streamline Art Deco. The bar and restaurant on its lower level, however, remain a stellar example of swank. With large windows allowing a view of Milwaukee Avenue, this is the place to see and be seen. Dark wood, sand-colored walls and an array of contemporary furnishings make this a cozy and sophisticated nightspot to enjoy a martini or high-end brew. Lively on weekend nights, the clientele is eclectic and could range from performers from the Milwaukee Repertory Theater to members of a local rock band. A delectable and diverse menu makes Hotel Metro a choice location for dining. The menu is the creation of Executive Chef Ron Edwards, and features appetizers ($4-$15) like the Maryland crab cakes and champagne clams; salads like the Portobello with strawberries, gorgonzola cheese and roasted walnuts; sandwiches ($8-$11) and entrees ($16-$27) like the ostrich a'la Bordelaise or seafood paella made with lobster, shrimp, scallops, crabmeat, clams, mussels and crawfish. And while Metro Bar has a reputation for excellent dinners, it also offers some of the city's best breakfast dishes, as well. -- Rachael Liska
