Conveniently located just a few doors down from Oakland Gyros (perfect for those late night, after bar munchies), this neighborhood hole-in-the-wall is a genuine Milwaukee bar through and through. Oh no, you won't find flashing strobe lights, high heels or fancy martini drinks here. What you will find is a friendly hangout that specializes in cheaper-than-cheap beer. Enter through the front door and be charmed by a small, smoky, wrap-around bar, flanked by a few cocktail tables, jukebox and pool table. The decor is simple -- wood paneling, a mix of beer promotional posters and leering locals. A great hangout for the college sect, Axel's has been around for decades and is close enough to the UWM campus to stumble home after a few dozen $1 bottles of Busch. Other popular nights to visit include Wedneday for $2 micro bottles, Saturday for $1.50 domestic pints and Sunday for $1.50 rail drinks. -- Rachael Liska

As a college student...my roomates..Pat, Greg and Chas would go there at least 3-4 times a week...it was like what u wanna do tonight and axels more or less won out..the owners are great ppl and dont mind if u bring in Oakland Gyros to eat there...they run a great bar and are friendly and the beer is cheap and they will get u f-d up on your birthday....if u come from a small town and end up at UWM make your new home axels...its a small town bar in a big city....--Steve

Cheep beer is why you want to come here. The crowd tends to be on the ugly/alchaholic side. The service depends... Most of the young and pretty bartenders will serve you a drink quickly. Avoid the middle-aged dumb guy behind the bar (and unless you are a pretty girl, he'll probably avoid you.) They have recently repainted and remodeled to make it less smokey and have added plasma tvs. The only problem is that they forgot to clean. The mens room always smells of urine and the back bathroom usually smells of pot smoke. See if you can count the number of fruit flys going by your nose in a half hour (unless its winter, I betcha can't count that high.) Did I mention its dirty and stinky?

Review of an off-hour drinker: This bar is great. Very real. On Sunday afternoons, the beer is cheap, the patrons are down to earth, and the staff are friendly. If you want conversation, or to sit and drink in silence, this bar will satisfy your needs. As the evening wears on, it becomes a little more packed, and more rowdy, but such is life. If you don't like that scene, leave early. Otherwise, sit back and nurse a pint.
