Rate and Write a Review Francophiles' hearts will flutter when they come in sight of Balzac, a French restaurant just off Brady Street on Arlington Place. Opened in August 2005 and named for a French author, Balzac replaced the seafood restaurant Watermark, retaining the same attention to detail and class that had made Watermark a destination spot. Balzac offers a selection of small plate dishes including aging cheeses. Besides the finest, fresh Wisconsin cheeses, Balzac's menu includes duck and other French small plate dishes. The small plate concept is similar to Swig, but with a focus on complimenting Balzac's giant wine list which features more than 100 different types to choose from. While wine is the drink specialty at Balzac, the restaurant/bar also offers some astounding and adventurous martinis, with chilled fruits gently soaking in some of the drinks.
