The Milwaukee Art Museum is really two buildings -- the Eero Saarinen-designed structure (completed in 1957, it has drawn comparisons, visually, to a toaster oven) and the Santiago Calatrava-designed wing, open since 2001. Between the two, the museum can exhibit its permanent collection -- of nearly 20,000 artworks from Old Masters and 19th and 20th century artists -- and important touring shows. In between the traditional stuff, the MAM has holdings of Haitian and folk art, German expressionism and American decorative arts. Big names on display include Picasso, Monet, Rodin, Degas, Rothko, O'Keeffe and Warhol. Like any prominent city museum, the MAM works on outreach, bringing in viewers by offering classes, artist lectures, docent-led tours, music performances and a monthly event art/music/munchies event called First Fridays.

Fantastic Calatrave Design!!!
By horndoc on 04/08/2006
What a marvelous blending of building design integrating the nautical environment of Lake Michigan. Awesome sail-like roof structure. The museum is not one of the world's greatest, but I was very surprised at the large number (in the many thousands) of significant art works by well known artists. Seems like it has a really nice program of visiting art collections. VERY VERY impressive.
