One look at the creative menu of this casual, yet classy creation by well-known local chef Sandy D'Amato, and your taste buds will be doing the Can Can. Located in the heart of the Historic Third Ward, the Coquette Cafe opened in February 1999. A tasty interpretation of an authentic French cafe, the eatery is easier on the pocketbook than its sister restaurant, Sanford. That doesn't mean the fare is any less spectacular. Elegant starters include dishes like smoked salmon carpaccio with lemon dressing and chargrilled fresh figs with serrano ham, smoked paprika potato salad and chevre. Even the pedestrian sandwich is brought to new heights (try the provincial roasted vegetable sandwich on Coquette's focaccia bread). Not to be outdone, entrees are absolutely mouthwatering and include bacon wrapped Strauss veal meatloaf with a porcini mushroom reduction, as well as seared halibut on grapefruit, black olive, grilled onion and arugula.

A cool little restaurant
By reggievespa on 09/02/2006
Being from Chicago and having eaten at some of the best restaurants, I was skeptical that we'd find anything decent in milwaukee, I was wrong. The town certainly has gone through a renaissance since I was there for school field trips in the 1970s. Coquette Cafe was the perfect combination of great ambiance and delicious food. The escargot was one of the best i've had, and although we didn't order the pate plate, the couple next to us did--it looked really good. Our dinner was good and the creme brulee perfect. We'd definitely go back. The crowd was a good mix of young and old. It was a nice choice.

one of the best!

Coquette Cafe is by far my favorite restaurant in Milwaukee. The food is very good, and the price even better! The atmosphere is youthful, fun, and cozy. The lunchtime crowd tends to be businessmen and women, along with some couples. At night, however, it warms up to families, couples, and others just looking for good food in a pleasant atmosphere. Great date spot! I recommend to all!

I'm vegetarian, my spouse is not. This place always has something to please each of us. We both enjoy fine wine, and they have that, too. Sanford's is a fine, occasional treat, but I enjoy this casual place more, and much more frequently.
