Surrounded by memories of zesty meals shared by hard-working Italian families, Sanford incorporates the best of Mediterranean with a bit of French flair and a dash of contemporary American elegance. The simple grace of the dining room provides a relaxing atmosphere, where diners can focus on enjoying themselves. The waitstaff expertly guides diners through selections of four, five or more courses -- the kitchen will even tailor a seven-course meal just for you. Classics such as grilled marinated tuna with cumin wafers are complemented by more exotic fare, including glazed squab and spiced peach couscous. Lighter possibilities include sauteed morels and chanterelles with a melange of vegetables, or the gazpacho with tomato relish and lime cream. Many daily specials, decadent desserts and an extensive wine list are also offered. The kitchen is very accommodating to vegetarians and those with special dietary restrictions. Sanford is definitely one of Milwaukee's finer special occasion places, perfect for a romantic night with a loved one or a great place to impress a date.

The only reason I'm not giving five stars is the after-effect. I had vomiting and diarrhea later that night. This is usually a sign of over-rich food and too much of it. I shouldn't have let my spouse talk me into four courses instead of three, but it was our 25th wedding anniversary...The food was excellent, though. I had a pear/roquefort tart, cucumber soup, vegetarian rissoto (by prior arrangement) and a cherry clafouti. Then there were details, such as the peppery breadsticks and the sorbets that came with two of the courses. Helpful waitstaff discreetly hovered at all times. If your digestion and wallet can handle it, this is a wonderful special occasion place.

Simply stated, the food was outstanding and the service was perfect. Be prepared for an unforgettable evening. The best doesn't come cheap so if you are looking for an inexpensive all-you-can-eat restaurant, look elsewhere.
