In July 1998, Mobile Bay Monthly called Yen "Mobile's Best-Kept Secret." Since then, it appears that more than a few locals have discovered this Oriental gem in their midst -- Mobile seems to have taken to Vietnamese food like a danh to (duck, in Vietnamese) to water. Yen offers a relatively benign introduction to Far Eastern cuisine with a wide variety of noodle and rice dishes and not-too- spicy ingredients. Novices may want to stick to the more-familiar-looking Chinese entrees, all of which are quite good; more adventurous types will want to try the cang cua chien (crab claws wrapped in meat) or the shrimp-wrapped sugar cane. Wash it all down with an Egg Yolk or Grass Jelly drink (we dare you) and leave with a new appreciation for all things East Asian.
