The powers behind the old Opry House in San Jose have moved their dinner theater operation southward, livening-up cultural nightlife on the Monterey Peninsula. The Barbary Coast Theater, housed in the old GroveMont Playhouse in Monterey, is the brainchild of Harry and June Fromm, the husband-and-wife team responsible for the zany shows. The Barbary Coast is a veritable dramatic factory, never going dark, instead featuring a lineup of constantly rotating productions written by Harry himself. The stories are comedic melodramas that spoof contemporary popular films or plays; they carry cute names like 'Gizzard of Ozz' and 'Fatthumb of the Opera.' For the full dinner theater experience, gather up ten friends and make a reservation for one of the tables near the front of the stage, or else you'll end up being seated on benches in the upper tiers. Audiences are encouraged to give feedback and interact with the cast, which is made up mostly of Monterey-area locals and some holdovers from the Opry House days. -- Maya Kroth

one word - awesome

I saw their show one weekend, and the next I was in it! The cast and owners work really hard to keep the audience involved and laughing and the vaudeville part of the show will have you throwing popcorn and rolling on the floor laughing. Bring your own beer but leave the kids at home. Great entertainment for business or birthday parties!

i've seen their show "Kissing Cousins" like 4 times...seriously it's funny...and i've been to their show "Fat thumb of the Opry" and it's also funny. the skits that follow the main show are either funny, highly enjoyable or enjoyably funny high. it's a must for any person on this desolate peninsula in need of a good laugh on a friday/saturday night...especially military kids under 21...go you'll enjoy it

All I remember from the old days is the watered down booze and the director's wife doing everyone in sight. I remember one time she did some guy while he was AT the cast party. We did'nt realize it till we watched the tape later. The owner always kicked down good tips, pizza and beer EVERY show for us actors though. He did take good care of us and was generous with free addmission for our family and friends. I hope he's stopped calling his wife a c*nt though...

There is no show like this in Monterey. This is the most fun you can have with your clothes one. Bring a six pack and enjoy the show, I was laughing the entire time...the cast really knows how to interact with the audience. Bring your friends with you cause they'll have a blast!
