Rate and Write a Review The powers behind the old Opry House in San Jose have moved their dinner theater operation southward, livening-up cultural nightlife on the Monterey Peninsula. The Barbary Coast Theater, housed in the old GroveMont Playhouse in Monterey, is the brainchild of Harry and June Fromm, the husband-and-wife team responsible for the zany shows. The Barbary Coast is a veritable dramatic factory, never going dark, instead featuring a lineup of constantly rotating productions written by Harry himself. The stories are comedic melodramas that spoof contemporary popular films or plays; they carry cute names like 'Gizzard of Ozz' and 'Fatthumb of the Opera.' For the full dinner theater experience, gather up ten friends and make a reservation for one of the tables near the front of the stage, or else you'll end up being seated on benches in the upper tiers. Audiences are encouraged to give feedback and interact with the cast, which is made up mostly of Monterey-area locals and some holdovers from the Opry House days. -- Maya Kroth
