From this hotel its an easy walk to historic downtown, Fisherman's Wharf and the beach. Good- sized rooms (most of them smoke-free) were refurbished in 1998. With the Monterey Conference Center only four blocks away, this is an excellent choice for business travelers wholl also enjoy the free morning coffee, newspaper and local calls. Bring the family (kids stay free with parents) and hit the heated pool and tennis courts before making that famous 17-Mile Drive along the coast. You can't pass up visiting Carmel, Pebble Beach or Cannery Row, either. Free parking and cable TV with HBO come with the room rates and refrigerators are available upon request. Travelodge doesn't have an on-site restaurant, but take your pick of more than 29 that are nearby. This place really puts you in the heart of the breathtaking coastal scenery of Monterey Bay and Peninsula. --Karen Hildebrand
